Australian Defence Force strengthens sporting ties in Tonga

The Australian Defence Force Rugby League (ADF RL) has completed a successful tour in Tonga, where ADF personnel conducted training and coaching clinics with junior players and His Majesty’s Armed Forces (HMAF) players, from 15 to 17 May 2019.

Building on the Australian National Rugby League’s clinics, the program brought together the defence forces of Australia and Tonga to share coaching skills and deliver training to local schools.

Space Surveillance Telescope Building handover

The Defence Estate and Infrastructure Group (E&IG) have today handed over ownership of the new Space Surveillance Telescope Building to the Defence Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG).
The completed building and supporting facilities, located in Exmouth, Western Australia, are an important milestone in Project AIR 3029 Phase 2 – Space Surveillance Telescope. The Space Telescope will be housed in the new building and its installation is on track to meet Initial Operating Capability in 2021.

HMAS Ballarat continues illicit drug seizures in the Middle East

Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Ballarat has intercepted another 2.6 tonnes of illicit drugs while conducting a patrol in international waters in the Arabian Sea.
The seizures, including approximately 2.5 tonnes of hashish and 135kg of heroin, were discovered in two vessels suspected of illegal activity on 5 and 7 May 2019.
The vessels, known as dhows, were exhibiting signs of suspicious activity and were subsequently boarded and inspected by the crew of HMAS Ballarat.

Shared passion for rugby unites Tongan and Australian forces

The one week tour of Tonga by Australian Army Rugby Union (AARU) culminated on game day, with matches between the men’s and women’s elite defence teams on 11 May 2019.
Throughout the week the AARU trained with His Majesty’s Armed Forces players, played in a 7’s tournament, engaged with local school and church communities, and conducted coaching clinics.
AARU Program Manager, Lieutenant Colonel Ashley Cootes said the week-long tour provided opportunities for meaningful engagement between the Australian and Tongan rugby teams, both on and off the field.

Aegis Combat System Integration Limited Tender Released

Defence has selected Raytheon Australia to act as its Australian Aegis Systems Integration Agent.
Defence has issued a Limited Request for Tender to Raytheon to establish a Deed of Standing Offer under which Raytheon Australia will provide Aegis combat system integration support for up to six years.
Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, said that the United States Navy’s proven Aegis combat management system, which is already fitted to the Hobart Class Destroyers, will be fitted to the Hunter Class Frigates as well.

Another piece of the Catalina puzzle: Reconnaissance mission update

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has positively identified a World War Two Catalina aircraft A24-64 following a successful reconnaissance mission in the Philippines.
In March 2019, RAAF conducted an inspection of a crash site south-east of Cape Calavite on the north-west end of Mindoro Island, after they became aware of several artefacts at this location in 2014. These artefacts consisted of a small metal tube engraved with the aircraft manufacturer’s logo, a brass crown identified by the RAAF Museum as part of an early RAAF officer’s cap badge, and .303 ammunition.

ADF announces its 2019 King’s Cup rowing team

The rowing team representing the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta King’s Cup event in the United Kingdom (UK) in July was announced today.
Patron of ADF Rowing, Air Vice Marshal Leigh Gordon said this year marked the centenary of the King’s Cup, which was last contested at the Royal Henley Peace Regatta of 1919, with Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America competing.

Defence seeks engineering support vehicles

The Department of Defence has released a Request for Tender (RFT) for engineering support vehicles including earth-moving and material handling equipment.

Due to operational requirements, Defence has identified a need to replace a range of engineering platforms including bulldozers, concrete batching plant, cranes, excavators, front-end loaders, graders, rock crushers, rollers, skid-steer loaders and telescopic handlers.

Defence Approaches Market for Leased Office Accommodation

The Department of Defence is approaching the property market for leased office accommodation solutions for existing Defence requirements in Canberra.

Several Defence office accommodation leases in Canberra, including the Campbell Park Offices lease, are expiring by 2022.

A competitive lease procurement process will be undertaken for up to 65,000m2 of office accommodation to ensure value-for-money solutions to meet Defence’s accommodation requirements. No decision has been made ahead of this process to relocate from existing leased office locations.
