Defence completes Tropical Cyclone Trevor support mission

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has concluded its assistance to the Northern Territory (NT) Government, after successfully contributing to Australia’s largest pre-cyclone evacuation operation ahead of Tropical Cyclone Trevor.
Three Royal Australian Air Force C-130J Hercules transport aircraft transported more than 950 residents out of Groote Eylandt and McArthur River Mine airfield near Borroloola on 22-24 March.
ADF personnel also assisted with the establishment of evacuation centres in Katherine and Darwin for hundreds of evacuees.

Search Ends for Vampire I

Two Royal Australian Navy ships have finished an intensive underwater search for World War Two destroyer HMAS Vampire I. New data has been collected but the wreck’s final resting place off the Sri Lankan coast remains unknown.
HMAS Vampire I sank during a Japanese air raid on 9 April 1942, but the ship’s precise location has never been identified. Nine Australian sailors died in the attack.
